Odisha court awards 20-year RI to six for gangrape

A local court in Odisha’s Jajpur district today awarded 20-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) to six persons convicted of gangraping a married woman over two years ago.

According to reports, Jajpur Additional District and Sessions Judge court today pronounced the quantum of punishment to six persons accused of gangraping a woman.

Pronouncing the judgement, Judge Bikram Kumar Pradhan sentenced the six convicts to 20 years rigorous imprisonment with Rs 5000 fine each failing which the jail term would be extended by six more months.

“The court has found the accused persons guilty of gangraping the woman and sentenced them to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5000,” Public Prosecutor Rajendra Prasad Nayak said.

As many as 15 witnesses were examined during the trial and the court pronounced the judgement based on their statements, Nayak added.

The convicted have been identified as Larapa Tiria (23), Dina Tiria (22), Jera Chatar (22), Natha Chatar (21), Dibar Badra (25) and Toram Samad (22).

It may be mentioned here that the victim –Julie (name changed)—hailing from Damodarpur village under Sukinda police limits in the district used to commute daily from her village to Bhuban in Dhenkanal district.

On February 17, 2014, these anti-socials waylaid Julie while she was on her way to Damodarpur in the evening after alighting at Mangalpur bus stop in the evening. They took her forcibly to a secluded place where they raped her one after another.

The victim narrated her ordeal to parents as her husband was away. Three days after the incident, the matter was reported at Sukinda police station on February 20.

Police had registered a case under section 376 D and 34 of IPC.
