Odisha court convicts former VLW for misappropriating NREGS funds

A special Vigilance court today awarded three-year jail term to a former Village level worker (VLW) cum Panchayat Extension Officer (PEO) for misappropriation of over Rs 26 lakh from NREGS fund.

According to sources, special Vigilance Court Judge here sentenced Biswanath Nimalpuri to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years and pay a fine of Rs 50, 000, in default of payment of fine to undergo RI for six months for the offence under section 13(2) r/w 13(1) (c) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.

Further, he was sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years and pay a fine of Rs 50, 000, in default of payment of fine to undergo RI for six months for the offence under section 409 of IPC. The substantive sentences are to run concurrently, the court said.

Nimalpuri was accused of unauthorized withdrawal and misappropriation of Rs 26, 31, 338 while he was posted as VLW cum PEO at Ranga gram panchayat under Kasipur block in Rayagada district.
