Odisha Crime Branch nabs fraudster from Kolkata

Bhubaneswar: The Crime Branch of Odisha police today claimed to have arrested a fraudster from Kolkata on charges of duping an elderly person in Bhubaneswar.

A Crime Branch team led by Inspector Abantimani Nayak arrested accused Prasant Dwivedi from Alipore in Kolkata and seized some incriminating documents from his possession.

Dwivedi has been produced in a court in Alipore and is being brought to Odisha on transit remand, said a Crime Branch official.

According to police, some fraudsters had duped a senior citizens of Forest Park area in Bhubaneswar of Rs 74 lakh some days back.

The victim had deposited the amount in several installments in some bank accounts as per the advice of the fraudsters, who had identified themselves as officials of some private insurance firms, for clearance of his insurance benefits.

He then had lodged a complaint in this regard with police. The CID CB Cyber Police Station in Cuttack had registered a case in this regard and launched a probe, sources said.

The Crime Branch team had earlier arrested one Dharmendra Kumar (36) from Lucknow in connection with the duping case.

Kumar had created a fake domain IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India) and created a fake email ID with his own credentials. Kumar had sold the email ID and password to Dwivedi, police said.
