Odisha: Demand to declare Puri Bada Danda as ‘No Fly Zone’ rejected

Puri: The Civil Aviation Ministry today rejected the demand of Odisha police to declare Bada Danda, especially the area surrounding Srimandir, as ‘No Fly Zone’ during Ratha Jatra.

Briefing mediapersons here, Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) Sarthak Sarangi said, “The Civil Aviation Ministry was urged to declare Bada Danda as ‘No Fly Zone’ in view of the annual Ratha Jatra festival. However, the Ministry has turned down the proposal citing that the region is an international route for air services.”

Quoting the Ministry, Sarangi said flights fly around 35,000 feet high on the route. Hence, there is no threat to Srimandir and Bada Danda.

“However, a special alert system would be put in place if any aircraft flies below 10,000-feet MSL, in case of emergency,” he added.

The nine-day festival of Lord Jagannath and his divine siblings will begin on July 14.
