Odisha DGP reviews law & order in violence-hit Sambalpur

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) Sunil Kumar Bansal today visited violence-hit Sambalpur city and discussed the law and order situation with senior officials.

The DGP reached Jamadarpali airstrip from Bhubaneswar in a chopper at around 4 pm today and headed towards the office of Inspector General of Police (Northern Range) Deepak Kumar in Sambalpur.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Radha Kishan Sharma and Additional DGP (Intelligence) Sanjeev Panda accompanied Bansal, sources said.

“Stern action will be taken against the persons involved in the violence in Sambalpur. Several platoons of police force have been deployed in the city. The situation will improve within a day or two,” said the DGP after a meeting with the IGP.

Earlier, the district administration clamped curfew in Sambalpur for indefinite period in the wake of violence during the celebration of Hanuman Jayanti yesterday. Some shops were torched in the Western Odisha city yesterday night, sources said.

The Home Department has also extended the suspension of internet services in Sambalpur by two more days to prevent the spread of any rumour or inflammatory message.

Notably, the district administration had imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in the city following a clash between two groups during a rally prior to the Hanuman Jayanti celebration on April 12.

Several persons, including some police personnel, were injured in the clash.
