According to reports, well-known international SCUBA diver Sabir Bux, with six members—Falguni Rout, Niranjan Mishra, Chandan Das, Khageswar Barik, D Sekhar Rao and Sushree Manaswini Maharana—began a mission at 9 AM on Tuesday from Penthakata area on the outskirts of Puri town on a country boat after being informed by the local fishermen that their fishing nets get entangled with an object in the area.

The team, after moving about eight nautical miles, dived into the sea for underwater survey of the area.

During the survey, the team came across a huge coral reef at about 60 feet from the water level. As the team members came closer to the reef, they found a sinking ship on which the reef had grown up.

The team members later had a video recording of the top portion of the ship.

They also tried to break a portion of the ship but failed. However, they managed to uproot a plant grown on it.

The team stayed in the area till 2.30 PM.

It may be mentioned that Sabir had found the presence of a sinking ship between Chandrabhaga and Astaranga in 2011 and later apprised the authorities of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).

Following information, the NIO team on Tuesday went to the spot and examined the sinking ship.

“There is a need to investigate the details of the sinking ship and when it had sunk. Besides, efforts should be made to locate the things inside the ship whose conservation is necessary,” Sabir said. (IANS)
