Odisha: Engineering student feared drowned in Hirakud dam

Sambalpur: In a tragic incident, an engineering student is feared drowned in Hirakud dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district today.

The 18-year-old identified as Surya Gopal was a third-year student of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) at Burla here. Surya was a native of Khasta Sahi of Berhampur in Ganjam district.

According to reports, Surya along with four friends had gone to the dam for a picnic. The five had visited Jhankarani temple and had gone to take a bath in the dam when tragedy struck them.

While they were bathing Surya slipped and despite all efforts by his friends he drowned and could not be saved.

As news spread about the drowning of the engineering student, police rushed to the spot and launched rescue operations.

However, Surya remained untraceable till filing of this report.
