Bhubaneswar: Following recent floods in five districts of Odisha, the state government has estimated the total cost of damage due to the natural disaster at Rs 218.72 crore.

As per the estimate report prepared by the Special Relief Commissioner and released by the government here today, the agriculture department pegged damages due to the floods at Rs 4.3 crore.

Total loss of Rs 21.85 crore occurred in Water Resources department due to collapse of river and canal embankments (Rs 1.75 crore) and irrigation projects (Rs 20.10 crore). Rs 3.51 crore loss took place in the lift irrigation projects of the department.

While Rs 30 lakh damage was estimated in forest department, Rs 67 lakh in animal resources and Rs 10 crore in SC/ST department, the highest amount of damage Rs 60.7 crore was attributed to Works department followed by Rs 49 crore in panchayatiraj department and Rs 4.6 crore in energy department.

The floods in Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Koraput districts caused massive damage between July 15 and 19.

Even if the report will be sent to the Union Home Ministry, Odisha government will compensate the loss from its State Disaster Mitigation fund.
