Bhubaneswar: Fire broke out at a private hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack city today.

According to locals, fire broke out at the third floor of Trisha Hospital, located in Purighat area of the Silver City, in the afternoon.

The third floor of the hospital houses the ICUs, sources said.

The hospital authorities evacuated at least 45 patients, including newborns and shifted them to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Sishu Bhawan and other health facilities in the city.

Altogether 17 patients, including three newborns, were shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital while 15 kids were taken to Sishu Bhawan. The remaining 11 patients were rushed to various private health facilities.

“Fourteen adult patients (nine women and five men) and three newborns were brought to SCB. Two male and two female patients were admitted to the ICUs. The newborns were taken to the Newborn Care Unit. No patient has any burn injuries,” said SCB Registrar (Administration) Abinash Rout.

The fire might have been caused by a short circuit, said the hospital sources. However, an eye witness said there was an explosion while the hospital authorities were undertaking certain repair to the air conditioning (AC) system at the third floor.

“On being informed, our personnel reached the spot and contained the fire,” said Director General of Fire Service Sudhansu Sarangi.
