Deogarh: Amid increasing cases of cybercrimes despite the awareness measures by the Government, a girl from Odisha's Sambalpur district fell prey to yet another scam in the lure of getting a free iphone. The victim Chinmayee Pradhan, daughter of one Saroj Pradhan from Babusahi in Deogarh, has filed a complaint in this regard with the Cyber Police. Her father has filed another complaint with Deogarh police on Monday.
As per the complaint, Chinmayee, who studies in Sambalpur, received a phone call om March 9 where the caller asked her to buy items worth Rs 5,048 from e-commerce platform Flipkart in order to get a free iphone.
Lured by the prospect, she complied and made the payment through the UPI link sent by the caller. She then received another call were she was asked to pay Rs 13,990 as GST. The victim again fell prey and made the payment.
Subsequently, the caller again contacted her and reportedly told her that the GST amount is wrong and its processing amount has been put on hold. He then asked her to make another payment in order to redeem the GST amount. Suspecting foul play, Chinmayee reached out to the police the following day.
Official sources said investigation is ongoing and a case has been registered.
