Odisha girl set on fire by spurned lover battling for life

Koraput: A girl sustained 50 per cent burn injuries in Semiliguda area of Odisha’s Koraput district after allegedly being set on fire by a youth who had one-sided love affair with her.

The incident took place on Friday and the victim is battling for life at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

According to reports, the girl, student of a private engineering college in Semiliguda, was staying in the area with her friends in a rented house. The accused, identified as Gopinath Khora, had proposed the girl multiple times in the recent past. The girl had rejected Gopinath’s proposal.

On the fateful day, the youth barged into the house of the girl, poured petrol on her and set her on fire. He fled the spot soon after committing the crime.

The victim was initially admitted to Saheed Laxman Naik Medical College & Hospital here and later shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital.

A special squad has been formed to nab the accused, police sources said.
