Odisha girl student thrashed, ragging filmed in Ravenshaw varsity

A girl student of Odisha’s premier institute Ravenshaw University has leveled ragging allegation against classmates and roommates stating that she was thrashed and entire episode of ragging was filmed by them on mobile phone.

Acting on the allegation, the varsity authority has found one among seven accused students guilty and slapped her with fine amount of Rs 1,000.

The ragging incident left the hostel inmates and parents shocked as it occurred barely five months after a Divyang student was the victim of ragging in the university in November last year.

According to report, the victim, a first year student of MBA, was ragged by her two roommates and five classmates at the hostel on Thursday night. She was abused and thrashed by them. They also snatched away her mobile and forced her to give statement against her friends.

When she began speaking against her friends to save herself from the classmates, they recorded her statement on mobile phone. They also threatened her to leave the hostel apart from taking a written statement from her that she will be responsible if she commits suicide.

The victim was warned to circulate the video clip outside for revealing about the incident with anyone.

However, the student lodged a written complaint with the HOD on Friday, who suggested her to approach the department authority as the incident occurred in the hostel. Later, she made the complaint before the hostel warden.

The hostel authority probed the incident on the basis of the allegation and punished one student.

Meanwhile, the victim has been shifted to Mahanadi hostel. The matter will be sorted out after discussing with the victim’s parents at the university, sources said.

However, the hostel warden dismissed the allegation of ragging terming it personal dispute between two students. She said that the parents of all the students have been informed about the incident.

“It is not a ragging, rather a personal dispute between two students. The university has fined the student, who was found guilty in the probe, with Rs 1,000 and her room has been changed”, said Warden Uramisri Bedamata.

The entire incident will be reviewed today, said Deputy Chief Warden Rita Paikray adding that they have not received the complaint.
