Odisha: Girl’s family performs her tenth-day rituals as she marries sans parents’ consent

Aul: Family members of a girl performed her tenth-day (Dasah) rituals today as she married a boy of her own choice in a village under Aul block of Kendrapara district.

A source said that, simultaneously, marriage was solemnised at a temple in the village and Dasah rituals were performed at another nearly 200 metres away from the shrine.

However, the two typical occurrences have become the talk of the locality.

According to the source, the daughter of Laxmidhar Mallick of Aul Sadar was in love with the boy from the same locality for the past few years. Later, the girl got married sans the consent of her family. Upset with the wedding and expressing their resentment, other members of Laxmidhar’s family performed the Dasah rituals at Aul bazaar by keeping a photo of the girl.

“My parents are not objecting to the marriage but my paternal uncle and grandparents have forcibly instigated them to perform the Dasah rituals. I am happy here. However, Dasah done when a girl is alive should not have happened and is utterly a wrong act,” the girl expressed.

“Marriage procession was taken out on the road in front of our house by loudly playing DJ music. One of our enemies organised the Dian Mangula (a ritual). We are Hindus. The wedding was not done in conformity with Hindu religious practices,” the girl’s paternal uncle Baburam Mallick said.
