Odisha govt acts tough on absentee teachers

Bhubaneswar: The School and Mass Education (S&ME) department has initiated stern action against absentee primary school teachers in Odisha.

The department has initiated disciplinary actions against 26 primary school teachers who were found absent for last many days. This apart, show-cause notices have been served on 154 absentee primary school teachers, said sources in the S&ME department.

“At least 96 junior primary school teachers have been dismissed from service for their prolonged absence,” said a senior official of the S&ME department.

The state government has introduced several measures for improvement of school education in Odisha. The S&ME department had recently held a meeting of the District Education Officers (DEOs) and Block Education Officers (BEOs) of the Central Zone to take stock of various issues pertaining to the school education.

“During the meeting, the S&ME department came to know about the prolonged absence of some teachers from their places of working. The department took prompt action in this regard. The state government will hold similar meetings in future and take action against the absentee teachers,” said the official.
