Odisha govt announces award, chair in memory of Sunanda Patnaik

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government today decided to institute a ‘Sunanda Samman’ award in the memory of eminent Indian classical singer Sunanda Patnaik. This apart, a chair will be set up at the Utkal University of Culture for research and higher studies in the field of classical music.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi will honour a noted singer with the ‘Sunanda Samman’ every year for his/her contribution towards classical music.

A chair namely ‘Guruma Sunanda Patnaik Chair’ will be setup at the Utkal University of Culture for higher studies in classical music, the CM added. Sunanda’s houses in Puri and Cuttack will be developed as ‘Smruti Sadan’ after getting permission from her family members.

Besides, the State government will request Sunanda’s family members to donate her instruments and other items so that a gallery can be set up in memory of her at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya in Bhubaneswar, an official said.

The Information and Public Relations Department in association with Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi will organise a state-level condolence meeting at Guru Kelucharana Mohaptara Odisha Research Centre tomorrow to pay tributes to the departed classical singer.
