Odisha govt orders inquiry against KIIT for environmental violation

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Bhubaneswar, May 16:

The Forest and Environment department of the Odisha government has ordered an inquiry into alleged environmental imbalance created by KIIT, KISS and KIMS.

The department has directed Khordha Collector and District Magistrate, Member Secretary State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) and Member Secretary State Pollution Control Board to inquire into alleged environmental imbalance created by KIIT, KISS and KIMS by the construction of buildings, schools and hospitals in violation of Water Act and Air Act. The department has also directed for appropriate action in the matter after inquiry.

The department ordered the inquiry on the basis of an E-grievance petition filed by environmental activist Subash Mohapatra.

Mohapatra in his petition had sought the intervention of the department in the matter pertaining to the environmental threat created by KIIT, KISS and KIMS in Bhubaneswar’s Chandrasekharpur area.

“………The above-said institutions illegally constructed buildings by violating EIA notification 2006 and as amended. The institutions changed the true character and nature of the land, and obstructed the natural water sources and felled trees. Having unholy nexus with public authorities they constructed buildings for 5 lakh people along with school and hospitals without taking environment measures, including violation of Water and Air Act,” Mohapatra had alleged in the petition.
