Odisha govt puts officials on alert ahead of impending low pressure over Bay of Bengal

Bhubaneswar: Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu today put all districts collectors and authorities of Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) on alert as IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha till August 19.

The SRC also asked Agriculture department Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration Director, Water Resources department, all RDCs, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Inspector General (Fire Services), NDRF 3rd Battalion Commandant, OSDMA Executive Director and Information and Public Relations department Director to monitor the situation.

As per the IMD forecast, the cyclonic circulation over northeast and adjoining East-central Bay of Bengal now lies over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood and extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwards with height. Under its influence, a low pressure area is likely to form over the same area during next 12 hours.

August 17: The low pressure may trigger Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) at one or two places over the districts of Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Nawarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri till the morning of August 18. The IMD has issued an Orange warning in this regard.

Extremely heavy rainfall (Above 20 cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Boudh, Kandhamal and Kalahandi during the above mentioned period, said the IMD.

The IMD also issued an Yellow warning of heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur,Cuttack, Nuapada, Kendrapada, Gajapati, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh till the morning of August 18.

Besides, thunderstorm with Lightning very likely to occur over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Angul, Cuttack, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Khorda, Puri, Nayagarh, Kandhamal and Boudh. Similarly, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha during the period.

August 18: According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir and Nuapada from the morning of August 18 to the next day morning. An Oranage warning has been issued in this regard.

Heavy Rainfall (7 to 11cm) is very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Khorda, Puri, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh during the period. The IMD has issued a yellow warning in this regard.

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur at most places over the districts of Odisha till the morning of August 19, said the IMD forecast.

The SRC has asked the district administrations and concerned departments to make all arrangements to face any eventuality.

“The people residing in low-lying areas may be shifted to safer places. Steps should be taken to avoid severe waterlogging in urban areas. The authorities concerned should also regulate traffic on waterlogged and submerged roads,” said the SRC in his advisory to the collectors.

The SRC also asked the officials to report any damage caused to properties due to the rain or thunderstorm at the earliest.

“People are advised to keep watch on the weather condition and take immediate measures to save them from lightning,” added the advisory.
