Odisha: Gynaecologist arrested on graft charges; probe underway

Puri: A day after a gynaecologist of a Government-run hospital was caught red-handed while accepting bribe for conducting a ceasarian operation, Vigilance today arrested him in this connection. He will be produce before court today.

Earlier yesterday, Dr Sukant Kumar Jena, a Gynecology Specialist at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Charichhaka in Nimapada was detained
by Vigilance on charges of demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 8,000, including 5,000 in advance from the complainant for conducting a C-Section
of his cousin.

A case was registered at Bhubaneswar Vigilance police station under Section  7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 in this connection. Based on the complaint, a trap was laid and the doctor was caught red-handed in his rest room at the CHC. The entire bribe money was recovered from the possession of the accuse.

Following the raid, a raid was conducted on the residential building of the doctor at Nandan Vihar in Patia here. Following the raid, cash of Rs 1.12 crore cash, a residential triple-storeyed building at Kalarahanga under Infocity police limits, a plot at Jatni, a studio apartment in Puri, deposits of insurance policies amounting  to Rs 44.16 lakh, fixed deposits and bank deposits of over Rs38.63 lakh and two four-wheelers were recovered in the name of the accused and his family members.

Further investigation in this connection is underway.
