Odisha Health secy assures to fulfill VIMSAR medicos demands in phases

Odisha Health and Family Welfare secretary Arti Ahuja today in her discussions with the Junior Doctors’ Association (JDA) of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) assured to fulfill their demands in phases.

The meeting between the secretary junior doctors and VIMSAR authorities was held in a cordial atmosphere. The meeting was also attended by the district collector and RDC (Northern) among others.

The junior doctors while expressing satisfaction over the talks have said that they will take a final call on whether to go on cease work at the Association’s general council meeting to be held on Tuesday (February 9).

Earlier in the day, prior to the meeting, the secretary inspected various departments and services the hospital at VIMSAR, Burla.

Notably, the junior doctors and house surgeons had been protesting the deficiencies in the infrastructure.

It may be recalled that around 450 doctors and surgeons of the government-run medical college and hospital were on strike between January 12 and January 21 for fulfilment of their nine-point demand for better infrastructure in the hospital. The strike had left the medical services at the hospital paralysed.

The striking medicos had put their agitation on hold on January 21 after the government gave an assurance to act on their demands by January 31.

Last week, the medicos had extended the deadline by a week till February 9 for fulfilment of their demands.

The nine-point charter of demands of the JDA included installation of an MRI machine, delegation of financial and administrative power to VIMSAR, shifting of female medicine ward to a new building, strengthening of security on the medical college premises, round-the-clock water and electricity supply at the operation theater, a labour room, a sick newborn care unit (SNCU), an intensive care unit (ICU), a new medicine ward, a canteen, hostels, an increase in library fund, recruitment of staff for the library, filling up of vacant teaching and non-teaching posts, and improvement in the sanitary condition of the institute.
