Bhubaneswar: The State Commission for Women today sought a report from the Odisha Crime Branch in connection with the alleged torture on a woman homeguard by the wife of an IPS officer.
The commission asked the Crime Branch ADG to submit a report within 15 days.
"We have registered a suo moto case and sought a report from the Crime Branch ADG. We will hold discussion with the victim. Necessary step will be taken accordingly," said Minati Behera, Chairperson, State Commission for Women.
On the other hand, Homeguard DG Sudhanshu Sarangi has also sought a report from the Angul SP over the matter.
The victim, identified as Souridri Sahu of Angul, lost her two legs in a suicide attempt after allegedly being tortured and humiliated by the wife of IPS officer Brijesh Kumar Rai. She was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack.
According to a complaint lodged by the woman with the Homeguard DG, she was engaged by the IPS officer at his residence in the district for household works.
Allegedly, Rai’s wife used to beat and humiliate Souridri over negligence in work. This apart, the IPS officer’s spouse had been threatening the victim to dismiss her from the job.
On August 4, Rai’s wife asked Souridri to wash some of her clothes. The homeguard expressed her inability to do so citing injury on her leg. The accused then pushed the victim out of the house holding her neck and abused her.
Being humiliated over such treatment, Souridri decided to end her life as she jumped before a moving train. Though she survived, she lost her legs in the incident.
“The government will bear the expenses towards the treatment of the woman. The allegations mentioned by her in the complaint will be looked into and further discussion with her will be held in this regard after her discharge from the hospital. Subsequently, necessary action will be taken,” said Homeguard DG Sudhanshu Sarangi.
