Odisha IIM: 49 held for violence during Sambalpur bandh

Sambalpur, Nov 12:

At least 49 persons were arrested by the police on charges of rioting and criminal intimidation during the dawn to dusk bandh in Ssambalpur demanding establishment of the proposed IIM in this western Odisha town of Sambalpur on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when a group of people detained a coal laden truck plying on the road defying the bandh call. The group attacked the driver of the vehicle near the City Railway Station under Dhanupali Police Station area.

The truck driver ran to a nearby shop for shelter following which the mob set two shops afire. However, no one was injured in the incident.

Police said the mob also damaged the truck.

Based on the FIRs filed by the two shop owners and the driver of the truck, a case has been registered against the arrested people, they said.
