Khurdha: Days after mobile phones were recovered from two under-trials in Odisha's Khurdha jail, an inmate was attacked by a group of prisoners over suspicion of being a police informer on Sunday. The injured inmate was identified as Prakash Nayak. He was in custody for his alleged involvement in cough syrup trade. Case against seven persons have been registered.
As per reports, a few days back, two mobile phones were recovered from two inmates who were serving sentence for drug trade and murder in Khurdha jail. Suspecting foul play, police started investigation. During probe, another two mobile phones were found and it came to the fore that some inmates were carrying out brown sugar trade from the jail premises.
Following the crackdown, suspecting Prakash to be a police informer who was relaying information about the prisoners, a group of them attacked him.
Confirming the incident, Khurdha jailer Krushna Chandra Rout said the attack took place on Sunday night. "The state of affairs is not good in the prison premises. The jail is accommodating habitual offenders. Some of them are veterans who use muscle power to intimidate innocent inmates. Yesterday's attack was one such incident. Case against seven persons has been registered," he said, adding that police has started probe on how prisoners could gain access to mobile phones.
