Odisha keen to set up high-speed aluminium bodied trainsets in state

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today wrote to Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal expressing his eagerness to establish integrated coach factory for aluminium bodied trainsets in the state.

“The state government is extremely keen to set up the Integrated Coach Factory for high speed aluminium bodied ‘Train 20’ train sets to be rolled out by the Ministry of Railways by 2020. Odisha is the largest producer of aluminium and houses about 56% of the smelting capacity of the country. Besides, the state government is developing a dedicated Aluminium Park, where molten aluminium can be directly obtained from the smelter of NALCO for the manufacturing of the train sets,” Naveen wrote in his letter to Goyal.

“In view of the unique advantage in the state, the production costs for the coaches could come down substantially through use of committed feedstock from the mother plant in the immediate vicinity of the aluminium major. I would, therefore, request that Ministry of Railways may consider setting up the Integrated Coach Factory for aluminium bodied trainsets in Odisha,” he added.

The state has identified downstream and ancillary units in metal sector as one of the five focus sectors, official sources said.

Worth mentioning, a trainset is a set of coaches coupled mechanically and electrically with driving cabins at both ends and distributed traction power across the train. The acceleration and decceleration is faster in a trainset as compared to trains hauled by locomotives.

The trainsets will be lightweight and energy-efficient, run at 160 kmph and have an automatic door system. They will have both seating and sleeper berths.
