Odisha lawyers to continue cease work stir over ‘police excess’

Cuttack: The agitating lawyers today decided to continue cease work stir to protest ‘police excess’ till Monday across Odisha.

Earlier, Orissa High Court Bar Association had decided to continue strike till Wednesday. However, it was extended till Monday here today.

Meanwhile, the probe is underway following allegation was reported against police for attacking a lawyer in Cuttack.

The lawyers across the State had joined the strike after Orissa HC Bar Association launched cease work strike against attack on a lawyer by cops in Cuttack last month.

The strike was called by the HC Bar Association after a lawyer was beaten up by the police near Nua Bazaar bridge on August 28 morning.

Taking action against the erring cops, Cuttack DCP Akhileswar Singh suspended two Constables and a Havildar in connection with the attack on the lawyer.

The DCP suspended Constables BK Samal and UK Bhuyan and Havildar PK Behera for police excesses.

Besides, a one-month notice has been served to Home Guard Kishore Samal seeking his explanation, following which necessary action would be taken, Singh had informed at a Press meet on August 30.

However, the lawyers demanded arrest of the cops who were involved in the incident.

Several meetings have been held to end the deadlock over lawyers-police spat; however, in vain.
