Odisha man arrested for giving wife ‘triple talaq’ over phone

Cuttack: A man from Dewan Bazar in Odisha’s old capital city has been arrested for giving triple ‘talaq’ to his wife over phone, police sources said today.

The accused Barkatullah Khan (32) had given triple ‘talaq’ to his wife Munni Khatun (29) almost seven months ago, over phone.

The estranged woman had then filed a complaint with Mahila Police station following which the cops had launched an investigation into the incident.

The woman from Korei in Jajpur district got married to Barkatullah in 2011 and had three sons from their wedlock. However, Barkatullah’s family members did not allow them to stay at their Dewan Bazar house due to some family dispute owing which they shifted to rented accommodations in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Barkatullah used to earn his livelihood from doing odd jobs. Last year, he even moved to Bangalore for greener pastures, leaving behind his family in Odisha. Seven months ago, Barkatullah reportedly gave triple talaq to Munni to divorce her.

Following this, she filed a complaint against him in which she alleged that her husband has multiple affairs with women and even has married a woman from Tirtol area in Jagatsinghpur district.

As Union government has criminalised ‘triple talaq’, the man has been arrested under Section 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019 and Section 498 (A), 494 and Section 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act.

He has been sent to Choudwar Circle Jail yesterday.

Worth mentioning, the state reported the first case of triple talaq at Pattamundai police station in Kendrapara district on August 9, 2019 after the Parliament passed a Bill criminalising triple talaq on August 1, 2019. The husband had given instant talaq to his wife over phone from Hyderabad.

The Supreme Court had also banned ‘triple talaq’, calling the practice unconstitutional and in violation of Article 14 of the Constitution.
