Odisha man gets 7-year jail term in rape case

Udala: A local court here in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district today sentenced a person to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a girl in 2015.

The convict, identified as Mangal Murmu (26), had barged into the house of the victim on April 4, 2015 during the absence of her parents and raped her. A complaint in this regard was lodged with Udala police on April 9, 2015. Police had registered a case under Section 376 and POCSO Act.

Adjudicating the case, a POCSO court held Murmu guilty and awarded him the punishment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Murmu. In the case of non-payment of the fine amount, he will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of nine months.

As many as 13 witnesses were examined during the trial. The court also acquitted two accused, identified as Nimai Majhi and Ramdas Majhi, due to lack of evidence.
