Bhubaneswar: A man was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his wife over dowry in Sundargarh district of Odisha today.
Sundargarh district Sessions Judge Subhadarshi Patnaik also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on convict Pupun Kujur (42) of Jharbeda under Rajgangpur police limits, sources said.
Kujuru will face additional jail term for two months if he fails to pay the penalty amount.
As per the case records, Kujur had set his wife on fire over dowry on January 6, 2016. His mother Taramani and elder brother Galetin assisted him in the crime.
The victim was rushed to Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela with 90 per cent burn injuries. She had named Kujur as the prime accused during her dying declaration.
The district sessions judge convicted Kujur by examining 25 witnesses, investigation reports by police and other evidence in the case. However, his mother and elder brother were acquitted due to lack of adequate evidence against them, said public prosecutor Abdul Samim Akhtar.
