Odisha man kills wife for opting gas stove over firewood for cooking

Bhubaneswar: A woman was allegedly hacked to death by her husband over a trivial issue in Odisha’s Ganjam district today.

The deceased has been identified as Lili Nayak of Rugumu village under Dharakote block in Ganjam. Accused Mithun Nayak has been detained by the police, sources said.

According to the villagers, Mithun had asked his wife to cook food in firewood instead of LPG. A quarrel ensued between the couple as Lili cooked food in LPG today afternoon.

Soon the quarrel took a violent turn and Mithun allegedly attacked Lili with a sharp weapon, villagers said.

Some locals rescued the injured woman and rushed her to the Community Health Centre at Dharakote in a critical condition. However, she was declared dead on arrival by the doctors, sources said.

On being informed, police reached the hospital and sent the body for postmortem. They also detained the accused and seized the weapon used in the crime.

“Mithun had asked his wife to cook in firewood as dry weather is prevailing now. The couple got engaged in a quarrel. In a fit of rage, Mithun hacked his wife with a sharp weapon,” said Mithun’s father.

Lili’s parents, however, alleged that Mithun and other members of his family had been torturing her over one issue or other since long. “Mithun was heavily drunk and picked up a quarrel with Lili before hacking her to death. Mithun’s parents were also involved in the incident,” alleged Lili’s mother.
