Odisha: Man sets wife on fire, hangs self after family quarrel turns ugly

Phulbani: Family quarrel took an ugly turn when a man committed suicide after trying to immolate his wife in Shankarakhol Gaudasahi village in Kandhamal district today.

Villagers said the deceased, Rabin Kata used to get drunk and beat his wife, Urmila. Even he was arrested earlier on charges of beating his wife and torching his house. Recently he was released from jail on bail. Following a heated argument, on Tuesday night, Robin poured kerosene on Urmila and set her ablaze.

Urmila was initially rushed by some villagers to Kandhamal district headquarters hospital in critical condition. After her condition worsened, she was shifted to MKCG hospital in Berhampur.

In the meantime, Robin hung himself with a rope from the ceiling of his house.

Family members and villagers hurriedly burnt the man’s body without informing police. Till yet no complaint has been lodged in connection with the incident, said a police official on condition of anonymity.
