Odisha man who abandoned wife after selling her kidney arrested

Malkangiri: A man, who abandoned his wife after allegedly selling her kidney, was arrested here in the district.

The accused person has been identified as Prasant Kundu, a resident of Kotameta village under Malkangiri police limits.

Kundu was arrested following a written complaint by his wife Ranjita Kundu in August last week.

Based on the complaint, the Malkangiri Police had registered a case on August 28 under sections 498(A), 494, 506, 34 of IPC and 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.

As per the complaint, Ranjita Kundu had married Prasant Kundu, son of Sibu Prasad Kundu 12 years ago. The couple has two children. One year of their marriage, her husband and sister-in-law Sima Nandi started harassing her physically and mentally for dowry.

Four years ago, Ranjita’s husband pressurized her to sell her one kidney for money, the FIR stated.

Prasant allegedly sold his wife’s kidney without her knowledge. Along with his sister, the accused assimilated all the money.

Eight months ago, Prasant went to Andhra Pradesh for work and returned to Malkangiri on August 27. However, he married another woman namely Kajal, a resident of MV 76, in presence of her sister, abandoning his first wife, alleged the 31-year-old Ranjita.

Following the incident, the victim filed a complaint with the Malkangiri Police against her husband and sister-in-law Sima Nandi.

According to reports, Ranjita came to know about the kidney theft recently after she visited a doctor for abdominal pain and medical test report revealed that one of her kidneys was missing.

Source said that Ranjita’s husband had admitted her to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar in 2018 following diagnosis of kidney stone. Without consent of his wife, he sold her kidney there.

Allegedly, he sold the kidney to someone namely Asim Haldar of MV 38 village in Malkangiri district.

Following the complaint, the Police initiated the probe and arrested Prasant for interrogation in kidney theft case.
