Odisha: Minor boy critical after tree branch gets lodged in neck

Keonjhar: A minor boy was admitted to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack in critical condition after a thick and long tree branch got lodged in his neck.

The victim was identified as Bishnu Mahakud aged about 12 years old.

The incident took place Dhangadadiha village near Ghatagaon in Keonjhar district where a tree branch pierced through a portion of neck of the minor boy after he fell off a blackberry tree.

According to reports, Bishnu has lost his parents since his childhood. He accidentally fell off the blackberry tree while plucking the berries and a branch of another tree near the blackberry tree went through his neck.

The locals rescued the boy by cutting the branch following the incident. The victim was rushed to Ghatagaon Community Health Centre (CHC) from where he was shifted to Keonjhar district headquarters hospital in critical condition.

After the doctors failed to remove the branch got stuck in his neck, he was referred to SCB Medical College & Hospital in Cuttack for surgery.

Mahakud went through primary medical tests including x-ray before surgery.

Sources said that a team of doctors conducted the surgery soon after examining the medical reports.

The patient has been put on ICU for observation for next 72 hours following the surgery, which lasted for around 3 hours.

“Bishnu was admitted here in critical condition. He was brought here with a long tree branch that pierced through neck from his underarm. The surgery was successful and he has been put on observation, said Dr Manoj Kumar Patnaik,” who attended to the minor boy.

“We will try to control the infection, which is likely to be occurred due to the injury in other organs including heart and lungs of the body. He will be discharged only after examining his health conditions,” he added.
