The Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court granted conditional bail to Bahinipati.

According to reports, a case was registered against the Congress legislator for his alleged involvement in vandalisation of a country liquor distillery in Boriguma on March 10 this year. Bahinipati along with district unit Congress members had allegedly set the liquor unit afire after getting on to a rampaging act.

As many as 30 persons were booked in the incident.

The Jeypore strongman had moved the Orissa High Court seeking anticipatory bail. However, the court had asked Bahinipati to surrender before the local court.

After appearing before the SDJM court here, the court granted him conditional bail and asked him to furnish a personal bond of Rs 20, 000 and two bailers.

“I wrote to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik several times and raised the issue in the state Assembly to shut country liquor outlets in Koraput. The adivasis are ruining their lives by consuming alcohol; the women are getting widowed. Almost 60 percent of women in the district are widowed and are in a distressed condition. We will continue with our protest till the outlets are closed,” Taraprasad Bahinipati said.

“They had applied for anticipatory bail based on an FIR filed against them. Several others have been granted bail in this case. The court granted conditional bail to the MLA on similar ground. The court has laid conditions that he would not indulge in similar types of offence, would not intimidate the witnesses and cooperate with the investigating officer in the case,” public prosecutor said.
