Odisha: Mortal remains of Naba Das consigned to flames with full state honour

Bhubaneswar: The mortal remains of Health Minister Naba Das were consigned to flames with full state honour at his native Jharsuguda today.

Das succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital here hours after a police ASI opened fire on him during an event at Brajarajnagar yesterday.

Das’ body was taken to Jharsuguda in a chopper today morning.

Earlier in the day, Governor Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and many other dignitaries paid their last respect to the departed soul at the minister’s official residence here.

The Odisha government has declared a three-day state mourning starting January 29 (yesterday) to pay respect to the deceased leader.

Finance Minister Niranjan Pujari, Agriculture Minister Ranendra Pratap Swain, Transport Minister Tukuni Sahu, 5T Secretary VK Pandian, MLA Dibya Shankar Mishra, former Chief Secretary AP Padhee, Food Supplies Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Higher Education Minister Rohit Pujari, former Sundargarh MLA Jogesh Singh, Textiles and Handicrafts Minister Rita Sahoo and many other leaders cutting across the party lines were present during the funeral ceremony of the deceased minister.

Das’ son Vishal lit the funeral pyre at Kherual cremation ground at Jharsuguda amid the presence of hundreds of supporters of the deceased leader.

Das began his political career from Congress party and got elected to Odisha Assembly twice from Jharsuguda constituency in 2009 and 2014. He had served as the working president of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee. Das left Congress and joined ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) just before the 2019 Assembly elections.

He was appointed as the Health Minister in the Cabinet of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik upon his election on a BJD ticket from Jharsuguda seat.

Das was one of the the richest MLAs in Odisha. Das had declared properties worth Rs 34 crore in his statement to the government last year. Das, an MA LLB degree holder, reportedly owned 70 vehicles and three firearms.
