Odisha: Mortal remains of Swarup Nayak consigned to flames with full State hunours

Cuttack: The last rites of noted actor-music composer-lyricist Swarup Nayak were performed today by his elder daughter Nibruti with full State honours at Satichaura cremation ground in Cuttack City.

The septuagenarian was given a ‘guard of honour’ by Odisha Police. Later, Nibruti gave Mukhagni (a funeral custom) to her departed father in the presence of family members, relatives and well-wishers.

Nayak’s mortal remains were earlier carried to Satichaura for cremation as per the Hindu rituals.

Worth mentioning, the elderly celebrity breathed his last at his residence in Cuttack at the age of 77. He was undergoing treatment for lung cancer for the last few months and succumbed yesterday.

Born on February 8, 1946, Nayak started his career in Odia film industry as a child artist in 1962 with ‘Laxmi’, followed by ‘Kaa’ (1965), ‘Stree’ (1968), ‘Suna Sansara’ (1977) and many more including ‘Jaga Balia’ and ‘Dora’. ‘Kalinga Putra’ was Nayak’s last film as an actor, which was released in 2008.

Started in 1984 with the film ‘Hira Nila’, Nayak went on and composed music for around 40 films and wrote songs for nearly 30 films. Some of his notable films are ‘Pua Mora Bhola Shankara’ (1996), ‘Sahara Jaluchi’ (1998), ‘Sindura Nuhen Khela Ghara’ (2002), and ‘Swayamsiddha’ (2010).

Nayak’s elder sister Parbati Ghosh (the wife of veteran actor, director and producer Gourprasad Ghose) was a popular actress in the Odia film industry. His elder brother Sarada was also associated with it.
