Odisha: Motorcycle looters’ gang busted in Cuttack; 35 motorcycles seized

Cuttack: In a major breakthrough, the Commissionerate Police today busted a five-member motorcycle looters’ gang in Cuttack City and seized 35 motorcycles and a Tata Magic vehicle.

Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh said on basis of a complaint lodged at Jagatpur Police Station on September 14, 2020 alleging loot of a Tata Magic vehicle, the police registered a case and launched an investigation. The police also set up check points yesterday evening and frisked vehicles.

At one such check point, the police personnel searched a pick-up mini truck and came to know the vehicle was the same one stolen from Jagatpur area. The police searched another person riding a scooty at the same check point.

The Cuttack DCP said Papu alias Papu Charan Roul and Jagan alias Jagabandhu Roul were detained after a brief questioning. While checking the antecedent, it was found that the duo was veteran looters.

Papu and Jagan accepted that they looted motorcycles from different districts. Based on the statement of the duo, the Jagatpur Police went to Binjhar and recovered 35 bikes from different places. Also, three more persons namely, Ratikant Pradhan, Prashant Samal, Munna alias Pratap Sethi were arrested.

The Cuttack DCP further informed nine cases have been pending against Papu at Choudwar and Jagatpur police stations.

On modus operandi of the looters’ gang, the Cuttack DCP said the five accused used to loot low cost motorcycles like Splendor, which are easy for them to break the lock open.

The five looters used to keep the vehicles at one place in Binjhar and sell them later after finding suitable customers. They were selling stolen motorcycles at Rs 4,000-5,000 each.

Investigation is on to find the complicity of others in the case, he added.
