Odisha MP demands central varsity status for Ravenshaw University

Bhubaneswar: After Utkal University, the demand for central varsity status to the Ravenshaw University was raised in the Parliament yesterday.

Lok Sabha member Bhartruhari Mahtab from Cuttack Parliamentary Constituency demanded the Centre to declare Odisha’s premier educational institution Ravenshaw University as the Central University.

He put forth his demand in the Lok Sabha during zero hour.

“The Ravenshaw University is the youngest varsity in Odisha. But, it has a long history. Founded in 1868, the higher education institution has been a college for 147 years and a university for 15 years. It has been training students from Odisha and beyond. The academy has given birth to many scholars, scientists, freedom fighters and politicians. The university has 27 departments and 23 PG departments. It offers Ph.D., Doctor of literature or (D.Litt.) and Undergraduate honors courses in 28 departments,” Mahtab told in the Parliament.

With the golden history of Ravenshaw University in the heart of the State of Odisha, the Central Government needs to immediately turn it into a central university in view of the higher education being offered in the educational institution, he said.

Mahtab added that while there are multiple universities in different states, only one central university in Odisha is run in Koraput.

The Cuttack MP in the Lok Sabha drew the attention of Union Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal to declare Ravenshaw varsity as a Central University soon with an aim at making the quality of education at the university world-class.

Two days ago, Kandhamal MP Achyuta Samanta had demanded to declare Utkal University as the Central University.
