Odisha: New twist to sensational Bhadrak double murder, rape case

Bhadrak: Giving a new twist to the sensational double murder and rape case of Bhadrak, the accused Gopinath Mohanty, alias Babula told police that his prime motive behind killing the duo is “money”.

Earlier in the day, the youth, who was arrested from Bhubaneswar on Monday, had cited ‘revenge’ as the reason to carry out the chilling crime.

Bhadrak Superintendent of Police (SP) B Gangadhar said the accused had planned to eliminate all family members of Rabi Beuria in order to take Rs 2 lakh in cash and other valuables from their home.

“The accused had murdered the couple to acquire Rs 2 lakh, which they had got as compensation after a settlement in some legal case a few days ago. He had also planned to kill thir minor daughter but could not as a neighbour came in while he was attacking the woman,” the SP told reporters while addressing a press meet here.

The SP ruled out the angle of past-enmity as the cause of the gruesome murder.

The accused had first murdered Rabi Beuria after getting him drunk and dumped his body in a canal before coming to kill his wife Bhaktilata and daughter, the police said.

Rabindra’s body was recovered from a culvert adjacent to NH-26 near Maa Kalitri Temple here only after the accused took the police to the spot where he carried out the crime.

Earlier in the day, the youth had confessed that he killed the couple to take revenge. He had said that he wanted to kill the couple since they had been troubling his parents for years.

Notably, according to police, Gopinath had pestled Bhaktilata to death with a grinding stone in Talasitha village under Dhamnagar Police Station in Bhadrak on Saturday night. The accused had escaped from the spot after tying the hands and legs of the deceased’s daughter.
