Odisha: Newborn goes missing from SCB hosp ICU; father alleges baby ‘stolen’

Cuttack: A newborn baby allegedly went missing from the intensive care unit (ICU) of Gynaecology and Obstetrics ward of SCB Medical College and Hospital here today.

The newborn’s father Tofan Kumar Jena of Chandanpur area of Puri district in Odisha alleged that the baby was stolen from the ICU. He lodged an FIR in this regard with the SCB Outpost police.

As per the complaint, Jena’s wife was admitted to the Gynaecology and Obstetrics ward of SCB with labour pain on Thursday. She gave birth to twin girls through C-section on that day.

“Both the babies were doing well. But, one of the two babies was diagnosed with jaundice during a routine check-up today. The newborn baby was taken to the ICU around the noon for necessary treatment. At around 3 pm, we came to know that the baby has been stolen from the ICU,” Jena said in his FIR.

Jena has alleged the involvement of the employees of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics ward in the incident.

“No one except the hospital employees can enter the ICU. So, we suspect the involvement of some employees of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics ward in the incident. The hospital authorities must take the necessary steps to find out the stolen baby at the earliest,” Jena said.

The hospital authorities have launched a probe by examining the CCTV footage, sources said.
