Odisha to have organ policy, bank soon: Minister

Odisha will soon have an organ bank and the government will soon formulate a policy with regard to organ donation, Health Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak announced here today.

“The modalities of setting up an organ bank and formulating a policy in this regard in the state is being worked out in consultation with experts from within and outside the state where these are in vogue,” the minister said while speaking at a function organized here at Jayadev Bhawan organized by Odia newspaper Samaj and Body Organ Donation Yojana ( BODY) to felicitate those who have pledged to donate their bodies after death.

“This will go a long way in solving  the problems faced by medical students in the state due to unavailability of bodies for research and studies,” he said.

Nayak felicitated persons who have pledged their bodies after death with a certificate at the function.

” We have taken an integrated approach to the issue. Whosoever pledges to donate his body after death also agrees to donate his organs. Our state is way behind in organ donation and transplantation, , said Pravash Acharya an office bearer of BODY.

A total of 333 persons took the pledge to donate their bodies after death. Out of the them, 234 will be given to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack, 40 to MKCG Medical College and Hospital at Brahmapur and 21 to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla.
