Odisha para-athlete sets world record by covering greatest distance in wheelchair

Bhubaneswar: Kamalakanta Nayak, a para-athlete from Puri district brought fame for Odisha by entering the Guinness Book of World Records today. In a manual wheelchair, Nayak covered the record distance of 215 km from Rajmahal square to Mater Canteen square by driving to and fro. The distance between Rajmahal square to Mater Canteen square is 1.14 kms. The event concluded at 4:30 PM today.

Earlier, Mario Trinidade from Portugal was holding the world record for covering the maximum distance in a manual wheelchair. He had covered 182.4 kms.

Nayak started his event to break the world record from 4:30 PM yesterday. He has targeted to cover 220 kms in the wheelchair in 24 hours. In between Nayak is having his food, therapy, CIC and hydration is done.

He has covered 43 kms in 4 hours, 89 kms in 9 hours, 118 kms in 12 hours, 165 km sin 18 hours and 183 kms approximately in 20 hours.

Officials of different government departments and institutions were present during the event.
