Odisha: Plus II college principal held for taking Rs 50,000 bribe

Bhubaneswar: The principal of a government higher secondary school (Plus II College) in Khurda district of Odisha was arrested by the Vigilance for taking Rs 50,000 as bribe from the spouse of an assistant librarian of the institute for clearance of salary arrears today.

The Vigilance sleuths arrested Keranga Panchayat Higher Secondary School principal Bidyutprabha Jena for demanding and accepting Rs 50,000 as bribe from the spouse of the assistant librarian to clear the salary arrears.

The assistant librarian has undergone brain surgery and he was in urgent need of money. The principal had sought Rs 50,000 as bribe from the spouse of the assistant librarian to recommend the competent authority for clearance of the salary arrears.

The spouse of the assistant librarian had lodged a complaint in this regard with the Vigilance department.

The Vigilance officials apprehended the principal while she was accepting the bribe from the spouse of the assistant librarian today. The entire bribe money has been recovered from the principal, said a Vigilance official.

The Vigilance police station in Bhubaneswar has registered a case against the principal under Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Simultaneous searches are now going on at two locations linked to the principal to unearth any disproportionate assets, added the official.
