Odisha: Plus II student drowns, 2 others missing while taking bath in Devi river

Bhubaneswar: A 15-year-old boy drowned and two of his friends went missing while taking bath in Devi river under Balikuda police limits in Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha today.

The deceased has been identified as Satyajit Barik, son of Khirod Barika of Ambashala, sources said.

According to villagers, Satyajit, a Plus-II student, along with three of his friends went to Machhagaon ghat of Devi river for taking bath in the morning. Satyajit and two others went missing in the river after they were drifted away by the strong current, they said.

On being informed, Balikuda fire brigade personnel and police launched a rescue operation. Satyajit was rescued in a critical condition and rushed to Balikuda hospital, where doctors declared him dead-on-arrival.

“Two Plus-II students from Ambashala and two of their friends from Bhubaneswar went for taking bath in Devi river in the morning. Three of them went missing in the river. The fire brigade personnel rescued one in a critical condition while two others are still missing. The rescued student was declared dead by the doctors at Balikuda hospital,” said a police officer.

One of the missing students has been identified as Swabhiman Barik, son of Manas Barik of Ambashala while the other one is from Bhubaneswar, said a villager.
