Odisha police ask pupils to leave madrasa run by Abdur Rehman

Local police here late last night raided the madrasa run by suspected al-Qaeda operative Mohammed Abdur Rehman following reports of the Islamic seminary restarting its operations again at Odisha’s Tangi without requisite approval.

A team of police reached the madrasa and found six students of Jharkhand at the residential school. The cops asked the students to leave for their respective homes as the madrasa was running without due permission from state Wakf Board.

The men in khaki also cautioned the teachers that the seminary, which was closed after the arrest of Abdur Rehman, cannot run without mandatory approval from a competent body.

Sources said, police would make necessary arrangement for the pupils’ onward journey to their native place.

Currently, Rehman is in the remand of Jharkhand police and the Special Task Force (STF) of Crime Branch of Odisha police would move the Tis Hazari court in New Delhi to take the al-Qaeda operative on remand from May 25 after the expiry of remand period. Earlier on May 4, Judicial Magistrate First Class (JFMC) court of Salepur had allowed the STF to take suspected al-Qaeda operative Mohammed Abdur Rehman Katki on remand for 15 days.

The 37-year-old Rehman, a resident of Pachimkachha in Cuttack, was arrested on December 16, last year on charges of radicalising youth for terror activities.

Later, he was booked under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

Rehman, who ran a madrasa at Tangi area near Cuttack, allegedly had links with a man involved in a failed car bomb attack at the Glasgow international airport in 2007, Odisha police had alleged.
