Malkangiri, Mar2:

Odisha police arrest the common villagers terming them as Maoists and force them to surrender for the sake of their promotion, alleged Maoists.

The civilians, who deny surrendering before police in Malkangiri, are assaulted by the security forces and are arrested in the name of Maoists. The serious allegation has been leveled by Maoist leader Punam Chandra.

In a letter to media, the Maoist leader has strongly criticised the police activities in the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) affected Malkangiri district in Odisha.

The villagers are victims of police atrocity in Malkangiri. They are forced to surrender before police in name of Maoists, he said in the letter.

Referring to a recent incident on February 21, he said, “Police took Waba Kabasi (35), a villager of Marigeta village in Badigeta panchayat under Kalimela block of Malkangiri district, to an unidentified location while he was sleeping at his home. Police are yet to clarify the reason behind the action and whereabouts of the person”.

Punam demanded the police to produce the villager in the court soon if he has been arrested on any charge.

The police officers are arresting common people terming them as Maoists for the sake of their promotion, he alleged in the letter.
