Odisha politician’s double murder link: Notices served to deceased’s kin

Raigarh/Bhubaneswar: The Chhattisgarh police today served notices to the kin of the deceased in connection with the murder of one Kalpana Das and her minor daughter Babli in the neighbouring state.

The notices have been served to two persons to appear before Chakradhar Nagar police to record their statements. The investigators have summoned Kalpana’s brother Varun Das and sister-in-law. Varun is a resident of Brajarajnagar.

Top Chhattisgarh police officials claimed that they have laid hands on crucial leads pointing towards involvement of Anup Sai and other people in the crime. This apart, they have got sufficient clue about the murder weapon used and the vehicles used.

The investigators had approached the local court seeking to conduct narco analysis test on the three-time former legislator from Brajarajnagar to corroborate the evidence. The arrested driver Bardhan Toppo and Anup Sai, during their interrogation, gave contradicting statements to police. For this, they are seeking court’s permission to conduct the lie detector test.

The three-day remand of former Brajarajnagar MLA Anup Sai will end today owing which he will be produced before the court.

“Anup Sai will be produced before the court today evening as his three-day remand ends today. We will pray for taking him on remand for three more days,” Raigarh ASP Abhisekh Verma said.

The court has reserved its judgement and will pronounce it on Monday, reports said.

Police said that involvement of one more person in the crime has come to the fore. We are trying to get more evidence in this.

On the other hand, a team of Raigarh police has left for Gujarat to locate the vehicle –Mahindra Bolero—used in the crime. A Bolero vehicle reportedly used to run over the mother-daughter after killing them has changed owners multiple times. It is currently said to be used in Gujarat.

Family members of the former legislator staged dharna in front of Jharsuguda Collectorate demanding security. They alleged the Raigarh police is threatening to pick up them from their home any time.

If sources are to be believed Anup Sai would move his bail plea in the court under medical ground. Sources further said that Sai takes medication for cardiac ailments and goes for routine check-up at a hospital in Bhubaneswar. As he is behind bars, his treatment is affected. Very likely, the Sai’s lawyer would make this as a ground for allowing his client to walk out of jail on bail.

Worth mentioning, Sai was arrested by Chakradhar Nagar police for his alleged involvement in murder of Kalpana Das and her minor daughter in 2016. The duo was killed and then run over by four-wheelers to disfigure the bodies so that it would be difficult for the police to ascertain the identify of the deceased.
