Odisha: Pregnant woman carried on stretcher due to lack of motorable road

Khariar: The sordid state of rural infrastructure has again come to light after a pregnant woman was carried on a stretcher to reach an ambulance in Nuapada district today. Due to lack of a motorable road to Kaparagada village under Khariar block the pregnant woman, Gharamani Majhi was taken in a stretcher for three kilometers to reach the ambulance.

After Gharamani went into labour pain this morning, her husband Umashankar Majhi informed the local Asha worker and ANM who in turn called up an ambulance. As Gharamani’s village was not connected with an all-weather road, the ambulance could not reach her. Finding no other option the villagers carried the expectant mother for three kilometers up to the ambulance.

Later the woman was then rushed to the Khariar Government Hospital where she gave birth to a baby boy.

This is not a lone case as earlier also several instances of pregnant woman being carried on a cot or in a sling have been reported from different parts of the State due to lack of all-weather road.
