East Coast Railway Engineers Association (ECoREA) today staged a demonstration here in front of their headquarters building to draw the attention of new Railway minister for early fulfilment of their demands.

Railway engineers from three division, Visakhapatnam, Khurda Road and Sambalpur, Mancheswar Workshop and headquarters joined the agitation. Later in the afternoon, ECoREA representatives, headed by general secretary Er Robin Mohanty, submitted a memorandum addressed to the Railway minister to the general manager, ECoR.

In the memorandum, they demanded abolition of old labour act of 1962 as degree and diploma engineers are clubbed with labour unions and the unions never represent them in a proper forum for which they have been downgraded at par with other staff.

Even after 161 years of formation of railway and 67 years of independence, degree and diploma engineers working as junior engineers and senior section engineers respectively are considered as organised labour in railways, the memorandum said.

These labour federations have recommended higher salaries than railway engineers to 7thcentral pay commission for non-technical and non-safety employees inspite of their lower recruitment qualifications, lesser duties with zero responsibility, no passenger safety issues and absolutely zero involvement with train movement, it added.

They also demanded that pay anomalies made in the 6th pay commission should be rectified at the earliest as the 7th pay commission would submit its report early next year.
