Odisha: Rare species of chousingha, bison sighted at Atei reserve forest

Bhubaneswar: Rare species of chousingha (four-horned antelope) and bison have been sighted at Atei reserve forest in Keonjhar district of Odisha recently.

The images of the chousingha and bison have been captured in the camera traps installed inside the reserve forest, said a source in the Forest department today.

This is the first occasion when rare species of chousingha and bison were sighted at Atei reserve forest. The Forest department has intensified surveillance at Atei and its nearby areas, it added.

Earlier, there were reports that a Royal Bengal Tiger was roaming inside the reserve forest. The Forest department had installed as many as 55 camera traps inside Atei and its surrounding areas to track the movement of the tiger, sources said.

Images of the rare species of chousingha and bison along with other wild animals like common deer, barking deer and bear were captured in the camera traps, they added.

“Chousingha and bison are usually sighted at Similipal National Park and Satkosia tiger reserve in Odisha. This is the first occasion when chousingha and bison were seen at Atei reserve forest in Keonjhar. We are taking the necessary steps for protection of the rare animals,” said Keonjhar Divisional Forest Officer HD Dhanraj.
