Odisha registers over 15,000 rape cases in past 3 years

Bhubaneswar: Over 15,000 rape cases have been registered in Odisha in past three years, informed Home Minister (MoS) Tusharkanti Behera in Assembly today.

Replying to a query asked by Congress MLA Santosh Singh Saluja, the Minister informed the House that total 15,713 rape cases have been registered in the state between 2019 and 2022.

Of total 15,713 cases, while 10,129 rape cases have been registered at different police stations, 5584 cases of sexual assault on minor girls were reported in the state during the period.

In response to the legislator’s question in Assembly, the Minister shared a year-wise data showing the number of rape cases reported since 2019 in the state.

As per the data, the state reported 2950 rape cases in 2019 followed by 2984 in 2020. The heinous crime surged in 2021 with 3327 cases. This year, the state registered 868 rape cases so far.

Meanwhile, the sexual violence against minor girls has increased in the past three years raising concern over safety of women in the state.

According to the data shared by the minister, total 5584 minor girls have reportedly been raped in the state during 2019-2022. While 1635 minor girls were the victims in 2019, 1646 rape incidents of underage girls were reported in 2022 followed by 3327 cases in 2021.

In 2022, 432 such cases were registered in the state so far.
