Odisha reports first COVID-19 death

Bhubaneswar: First death in Odisha due to COVID-19 has been reported as an elderly person died yesterday while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.

The deceased has been identified as a 72-year-old man of Jharpada area in the city. He was admitted to the hospital on April 4 as he complained of respiratory distress and had history of chronic hypertension.

Later, the septuagenarian tested positive for COVID-19 and breathed his last yesterday while undergoing treatment. Contact tracing and containment in this connection is underway.

“A 72-year-old male reported to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on 4th April at 1.00 pm with fever and severe respiratory difficulty. He was immediately shifted to isolation ward since he was having symptoms of a suspected case of COVID-19 and treated for respiratory failure with oxygen and supporting therapy. His condition worsened and he was put on ventilator on 6th April but despite all medical care, he passed away,” AIIMS-Bhubaneswar said in a statement.

“His sample taken on 6th April was found to be positive for COVID-19 infection by AIIMS-Bhubaneswar which was subsequently sent to RMRC for re-confirmation and it was re-confirmed on 7th April. As the patient was treated as a COVID-19 suspect from the very beginning, all hospital infection control and safety protocols were followed,” the statement added.
